One of my favorite things about running Skillet is the relationships I’ve formed with the readers. Beyond the comments sections—which is a surprisingly chill corner of the internet—lovely people will often DM or email me with suggestions, requests, and recipes.

Once such person recently sent me the below, with the message “Thinking of you. ‘The Communist’ lol,” which is both a solid burn and a very sweet sentiment. (It’s unclear exactly where the name came from, but I am obviously into it.)

As you can see, it’s a (classic) four-ingredient cocktail, but the combination of gin, cherry, and citrus is a pretty riffable template. I tried dropping the lemon and upping the orange, but it read as bitter, so I subbed in a bubbly citrus soda to make sure both sweet and sour flavors were in play. To make it, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 3/4 ounces of cherry liqueur
  • About 2 ounces of Squirt, or some other citrus soda

Shake the gin and liqueur in a cocktail shaker filled with ice until cold. Strain into a coupe and top with soda.
